SONG OF THE DAY- SUPERFECTA- NOVEMBER PAIN

A bleeding heart on a road at night

Words by Anselm Anderson

London-based rockers Superfecta continue with their impressive runs of singles with the release of "November Pain", a track initially scheduled for an early release, but was delayed due to the global pandemic. The track was penned last year about a relationship breakup, but the lyrics also relate to recent events.

The track sees the band progress with the aggressive and darker sound that emerged in the previous track Breathe In ( Click here to read the review) https://anselmanderson.blogspot.com/2020/09/song-of-day-superfecta-breathe-in.html.The quartet build momentum with a mix of metal and grunge, as vocalist Rob Negrini evolves as a likely frontman. His voice is rich and relatable, conveying raw emotions on this track. The songwriting grows stronger with drummer Vella's pounding sticks an evocative statement of power. Guitarist Danun Todd's punishing riffs and bassist Joe Head's groovy basslines maintain the heavier sound the band has explored.

Overall, Superfecta is a band unafraid to try new ideas, as November Pain looks set to heal the band's hopes for 2021.

SONG OF THE DAY- THE WOMEN- "DON'T WE"

Words by Anselm Anderson

The women are an emerging band, hailing from Poland. "Don't We" is the new single from the upcoming new album " The Machine".

The women recently earned rave reviews in their native Krakow, following a slew of concerts. The new track hopes to highlight their knack for conveying emotions, concepts and philosophies through a blend of modern rock and metal.

" Don't We" opens with a synergetic riff, accompanied by thunderous drumming. The vocals tend to switch from melodic and reflective, to angry and emotionally charged. The tempo soon builds to a more aggressive tone, as the singer croons " We can feel it, don't we".

The song soon breaks down into a funky instrumental to increase the tension to a melancholic string arrangement.
The finale sees steady drumbeats that see the vocals experience a range of feelings to convey the women's intentions to tell the story of topics that affect us all.

ARTIST INTERVIEW: HARRIET COMFORT " WE WANT TO CREATE MUSIC FOR THE GREATER GOOD"

Interview conducted by Anselm Anderson

HELLO, COULD YOU INTRODUCE YOURSELVES TO THE READERS?

Hey! We’re Harriet Comfort - an East London six-piece indie rock band. We’re made up of 5 Aussies (Amy, Brett, Sue, Rick and Sean) and 1 adopted Brit (Anna).

Our debut single, 'Time is Now' was released earlier this year, after being recorded and produced in our kitchens, living rooms and bedrooms during the global COVID lockdown. Since then we’ve been busy in the studio working on our follow up release, 'The Other Side', which dropped last month.

Amy Church - Vocals Sean Dalton - Drums Rick Gold - Bass Brett MacFarlane - Lead guitar Anna Peiris - Rhythm guitar Sue Summers - Keys

 HOW DID HARRIET COMFORT FORM?

We formed back in 2018 out of a mixture of reunions, chance meetings, and a pair of leather pants!

After all, reconnecting in London we initially got together for a laugh over beers jamming on tunes we love by bands we adore.

It wasn’t until we were offered a chance to be part of the MAS program thanks to our neighbourhood studio, Rooz in Shoreditch, that HC became what it is today.

And the rest, as they say, is history...

HC RECENTLY RELEASED THEIR SECOND SINGLE “THE OTHER SIDE “, I UNDERSTAND IT IS INSPIRED BY AN EVENING OUT - COULD YOU ELABORATE FURTHER ON MORE ABOUT THE TRACK?

Yes ‘The Other Side’ was conceived following a holiday abroad by a couple of the band members. A wild night out with an interesting fellow inspired the original lyrics which were penned back in 2018 at HC headquarters in Old St.

After working through the shape of the song (our first original track created in fact!), we realised how well we all worked together - with each person offering exactly what the track needed at that moment, however, something was missing and we decided to shelve it.

It wasn’t until inspiration hit this summer, at one of our first in-person jams post-lockdown, that the pieces fell into place and the song came together!

PETER MAHER PRODUCED THIS TRACK AND YOUR PREVIOUS TRACK” TIME IS NOW “. WHAT IS IT LIKE TO WORK WITH HIM AND WHAT DOES HE BRING TO YOUR MUSIC?

Yes, Pete’s a top guy, it’s been great having him work with us on both tracks this year. He’s worked with some incredible artists - we’re so chuffed that he’s been able to so generously give his time to our music. We hope to continue to work with him for the remainder of the EP.

“THE OTHER SIDE” HAS A MORE BLUES-BASED SOUND IN COMPARISON TO “TIME IS NOW”, WHICH I FELT WAS MORE LIKE A POLITICAL AND HARD ROCK TRACK. WHAT WERE YOUR INTENTIONS GOING FORWARD WITH THESE SONGS AND HOW DOES THIS REFLECT YOUR SOUND OVERALL AS A BAND?

Yes, you're totally right - ‘The Other Side’ is more bluesy compared to the harder rock sound that ‘Time Is Now’ has, which we love, as we really want to show the listener the variety of sounds we have to share.

At the moment we’re still shaping the overall HC sound, it’s evolving and we’re so enjoying just playing around with ideas in the studio. We all have such varied musical backgrounds and tastes which makes for a really exciting and interesting creative process.

At the end of the day, we’ve always said we want to create music for the greater good, create music that makes people want to move their bodies and create sounds that resonate with people - we hope that we can continue to do that no matter what form our music takes next.

THE FIRST TWO TRACKS HAVE INTERESTING STORIES BEHIND THEM. WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO WRITE SONGS?

We’re inspired by the world around us. We’re all passionate individuals who care about a multitude of factors including the environment, the live music scene, science, art - and through our music we try to communicate our love for these areas when we can. But sometimes we also write music without any specific agenda that just makes us happy about the people we love, the places we discover and the fun times we have.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY WERE YOUR INFLUENCES GETTING INTO THE MUSIC SCENE

With a band as big as ours we've been inspired by so many great and incredibly varied artists!                Individually we all have different personal tastes but together we are definitely influenced by              Wolfmother, Led Zeppelin, Arctic Monkeys, The Killers, Nothing But Thieves, Muse, Bon Jovi,             Foreigner, The Black Keys, The White Stripes, Foo Fighters, The Cranberries, Fleetwood Mac to name a few!

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE UNIQUE NAME  HARRIET COMFORT FOR A BAND  NAME?

Naming a band is never easy and with six members we had a lot of suggestions bouncing around. It wasn’t until one London summer afternoon a few years back following some celebratory cocktails that we finally, and democratically, voted on the official name - incidentally inspired by a mysterious pile of mail that kept getting delivered to our East London flat in 2017.

HC ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON AN LP EP, COULD YOU ELABORATE FURTHER ON THIS AND WHAT FANS CAN EXPECT?

You’ll have to wait and see…

HC ARE A SIX-PIECE ACT, COULD YOU DESCRIBE A WHAT IT IS LIKE TO BE IN A BAND OF THAT SIZE AND THE ADVANTAGES OF THAT?

It’s great! We’re so lucky to have such diverse backgrounds, we all work in different fields (ranging from the environment, finance, design and the creative arts), and as mentioned before we all come from different musical backgrounds (some of us from a more metal background, some from more classical sounds and even one who has a love for musical theatre!). We see our differences as strengths which all come together to create rich sounds and banging tracks!

THE PREVIOUS TRACK WAS RECORDED UNDER COVID RULES, WHAT IMPACT HAS THIS PANDEMIC HAD ON YOUR INTENTIONS TO RECORD MUSIC?

2020 has been tough, we won’t lie, but there’s been a lot of learning for us despite the setbacks a pandemic year offers! Not being able to record together in the studio for ‘Time Is Now’ meant we had to become more innovative when recording from home - our lead vocalist never knew IKEA furniture could make for such an ace vocal booth! But it also helped us push ourselves more for ‘The Other Side’, knowing what we could capture at home - we really tried to go above and beyond in the studio to find fresh sounds together.

HC RECORDED “THE OTHER SIDE “LIVE IN THE STUDIO AND WHAT WAS THAT LIKE AS A BAND TO BE PART OF COULD YOU ELABORATE FURTHER ON HOW THIS PLAYED A PART IN THE FINAL  CUT OF THE TRACK

It was great being together! Having the ability to riff off each other in the space in real time was a huge advantage this time around, really helping with the creative process and giving us the ability to make changes that would never have been possible over Zoom! The vocal layers, the extra guitar growls, and the added tambourine (originally egg shaker) all happened together in the studio - and without those elements ‘the Other Side’ would not be the same. We can’t wait to do it all again soon!

AND FINALLY, WHAT ARE THE FUTURE ASPIRATIONS FOR HC?

Right now we’re focussing on getting the EP finished and hope to once again get back to live gigs and being in front of the fans in 2021 and beyond! For all upcoming HC news be sure to follow us on socials @harrietcomfortband or visit our official website harrietcomfort.com

EP OF THE WEEK- GHOST DANCE COLLECTIVE- GETTING BY

Words by Anselm Anderson

Ghost Dance Collective are a band this blog first covered during the summer as part of a compilation for NHS workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Click here to read

I was instantly struck by their ability to intertwine beautiful harmonies with experimental instrumentation. And now they have finally released an EP, entitled "Getting BY" four songs of oddities and rarities that may feature in the future. The band's unique blend of Psychedelia and folk combine to create a sense of harmony and art to lift a few moods this winter.

Getting By is the self-titled opener is an enchanting start with a 60's vibe. Soothing vocals play over multi-layered melodies. The warm timbre was matched by the tender keyboards.

Rainy Night in Tolix is an acoustic track adequate for this time of year. Those aforementioned harmonies easily fit into intricate guitar patterns. A song that certainly warms up the cobbles.

Next up is an alternate mix of Clouds a psychedelic carousel ride similar to The Beatles. A slow-tempo number with 12-string guitars and synthesisers.

Finally, Here Comes The Rain is a fitting end with an uptempo feel to wrap up a pleasing outing for the band from Edinburgh.

Ghost Dance Collective are an act that delivers music to enlighten the listener with touching songwriting and engaging music that tugs at those heartstrings.

Getting By is now available via Bandcamp and Soundcloud

SONG OF THE DAY- VANGOGO - IMAGINARY FRIEND

Words by Anselm Anderson

The Van Gogh-inspired Michigan rockers Van GoGo return to the scene with " Imaginary Friend", the follow-up to the popular"Big Mistake". The four-piece was first formed in 2008 by veterans, Lead vocalist Nathan Mackinder and guitarist Jason Schaller, who were soon joined by drummer Jonah Brockman and bassist Paxton Olney. VanGoGo soon grew tired with life on the road and soon disbanded. They soon decided 2020 was a great time to forge a comeback and have set about with a slew of single releases.

Imaginary Friend is three minutes of guitar-driven punk with huge choruses and thought-provoking lyrics. A chugging three-chord guitar line explodes into a catchy melody. The song's pounding drums and effective hooks will leave you thinking some friends are not worth the hassle.
Mackinder delivers a powerful vocal performance with a hint of cynicism. He adds about the track, "This song is about betrayal. Some of your worst and most hurtful enemies start out disguising themselves as your best friend, what I call an "Imaginary friend"'.

Van Go Go paints a new picture of betrayal with this exhilarating song.

EP REVIEW- THE PLASTIC PALS- IT COULD BE SO EASY, FREE AND FINE

Words by Anselm Anderson

Last month, Swedish Garage Rockers' The Plastic Pals finally released their much-anticipated sixth studio effort, "It Could Be So Easy, Free and Fine" via Polythene Records.

The latest instalment was due to be unveiled earlier in the year but was stalled due to the worldwide pandemic. The EP was originally intended to celebrate the 15th anniversary of The Plastic Pals. The 4-track piece was produced by the band alongside Jorgen Wall, who also assisted in the recording and mixing of the final piece with Peter Maher mastering.

The four songs feature 3 recognisable ones alongside an unreleased edition. Opener Plastic Pals is the catchy lead single with jangly guitars and lead singer Hakan " Hawk" Sood crooning in this tribute to Douglas Adams' novel Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy, which the band were named after.

Next up is If Love Should Call, a country ballad steeped in emotion and irony. The slow tempo set begins with the strums of an acoustic guitar to melodic vocals, backed by Jenny Roos. The dark Hangin' In The Louvre follows with brooding vocals and macabre twin guitars. And finally, Jesus-inspired More Than An Icon wraps up an entertaining re-introduction for the band.

Overall, The EP features engaging lyrics, soulful vocals and energising musicianship well- worth the wait and time.

The Plastic Pals continue to attract new friends with their fun and wholesome music.

Song Review: HARRIET COMFORT- THE OTHER SIDE

busy nightlife in an english city. There is traffic and street decorations. It is raining

Words by Anselm Anderson

East London Rockers Harriet Comfort mark their return with 'The Other Side', released November 27th will be the follow-up to debut single Time is Now. (Click here to read the review)

The band took full advantage of the recent lockdown, and the " rules of six", to complete recording with producer Peter Maher live in the studio. Ryan Pinson helped mix the track, inspired by a night out with some unsavoury characters.

Harriet Comfort brings to life experiences to deliver a bluesy number that steeps to their depths to play to their strengths. The empowering presence of Amy Church on vocals produces a sultry essence to the backdrop of eerie keys and soaring guitars. Bassist Rick Gold's driving basslines rumble along to Sean Dalton's timely drumbeats. The song builds tension, as Church conveys a solitary figure. The dark overtones quickly explode into a catchy chorus. as atmospherics change to the increasing tempo. Guitarist Brett Mcfarlane adds a tantalising instrumental break towards the end to underlie a feeling the band has departed for the evening.

SONG OF THE DAY AGE OF IGUANA - TWO OF A KIND

Words by Anselm Anderson

Australians' Age of Iguana recently released two singles, "Two of a Kind & "Otherside" " Two of a Kind" is the first single from the band.

The Alt-Rock/3 piece consists of Ben George ( Vox. Guitar), bassist Bernard Hickey and drummer Aidan Smith. They were first formed by high school friends George and Hickey before, Smith later joined them from Melband.

Two Of A Kind is a psychedelic number, steeped in hazy vocals and screeching guitars to leave your head spinning.

The track was recorded during the first Lockdown when Ben George teamed up with Simon Polinski to mix and master the track in two separate locations: Ben's Home and Laundry Goat Studios.

Age of Iguana cites Oasis, Brian Jonestown Massacre and Dinosaur Jr amongst their influences, which can be heard here.

The track begins with a retro 70's vibe with dazzling keys and meaty riffs segue into George's laid-back vocals. George's simple strumming patterns accompany an equally accomplished rhythm section to feel like an acid trip through time.

The Age of Iguana is certainly on its way.

INTERVIEW- LEAVE'S EYE'S " THIS IS OUR LYRICAL WORLD WE ARE MOVING IN"

Interview by Anselm Anderson

I recently reviewed the excellent " The Last Viking", from German symphonic metallers' Leave's Eyes. The album focuses on the last battle of King Harold Hadrada at Stamford Bridge, before succumbing to his fate in England. The album is a beautiful display of orchestration, songwriting, and incredible dual vocals.

I got an opportunity to speak with lead singer, songwriter, and true Viking Alexander Krull about "The Last Viking", the orchestration, Viking sagas, and the difficulties of making an album during the pandemic

Hello, I hope you are well. Leave’s Eyes has a new album out on Friday called “The Last Viking”, Can you explain a bit about it, and what listeners can expect?

Alex: “The Last Viking” is a big, diverse metal album for Leaves' Eyes with probably the most epic Viking saga there is. We are also proud to present the over 90-minute film documentary “Viking Spirit” which was a lot of work, too, and it was filmed in a period of 5 years!

I understand the title refers to the last battle of Hardrada in England before he met his untimely fate. Can you elaborate more on the topic, and how you feel this played a part in the development of the music?

Alex: True, as especially this concept album has such a fantastic background! The adventures of Hardrada are very exciting, I guess you could easily make a big tv show like Game of Thrones out of it, maybe they got even inspired by this saga. We start the album at the moment when Hardrada dies and getting hit by an arrow in his neck at Stamford Bridge in England in the battle for the crown of England. In the last breath, his whole life comes back in flashes and we are taking the listeners back into the adventures of the Norse king where he travels through faraway countries, had to flee as young man from Norway, fighting for the Rus king and serving the Varangian guard, getting married to a Russian Princess and returning to Norway to become a king. What a story and what an impact on history - after Harald Hardrada died in the Battle at Stamford Bridge in 1066, the Viking age was over. So this is an epic turning point in history, which you can find and hear musically for example in the dark and opulent title track of the album.

I understand the band are fans of Viking saga, how was the band able to transpose a historical figure into lyrics for the album?

Alex: I did a lot of research for this album. The research itself was already an adventure of its own. I am a history nerd and also I'm a sword fighter in the Viking reenactment scene. I've been doing this for many years, training every week, going to battles to fight and having Viking friends all over the world. The group JOMSBORG which I'm part of is the biggest modern Viking army and international group out there based in many countries and several continents. So this is something which I surely bring into the lyrical cosmos of LEAVES' EYES. With the album, we will also release the DVD “Viking Spirit” which is an over 90-minute film documentary where you can find out a lot of the fascination of Viking Lifestyle, living history, Norse mythology and connection to the music of Leaves' Eyes. By the way, the soundtrack of “Viking Spirit” is also great and available like the movie on the Artbook edition of the new album!

Do you find it easier to write about a subject like this, in contrast to more personal songs based on your life experiences?

Alex: I think with Leaves' Eyes we will always be connected with Norse mythology, medieval topics, powers of nature, legendary landscapes and mystical themes. So all our albums can be seen in a continuation and evolving process. This is the lyrical world that we are moving in, and to me, each of the songs means also something personal as I try to connect myself with the topics.

The haunting single “Dark Love Empress” features examples of strong songwriting and harrowing vocals from Elina Sirala, what is the song about|?

Alex: “Dark Love Empress” is about the secret unfulfilled love of the Byzantine Empress Zoe. The sagas tell us that Zoe was after Harald, but when he rejected her love she put him in prison. A tragic, dark atmospheric song.

The track also features some wonderful arrangements from musicians that accentuate the vocals. These appear on the album throughout with some unique instruments. Could you tell me more about the people involved, and how you were able to coerce them into joining you in the studio during recordings?

Alex: The whole album is a very song-oriented work of music, with a huge production in the back to support the music itself – from classical instruments, big choirs, Viking shouts to traditional natural instruments like Nyckelharpa, Fiddles and big war drums combined with the heavy metal sound. We love to work with real instruments and musicians. So, for example, we worked with our friend and Nyckelharpa player Thomas Roth, who came to our headquarters and jammed along to several songs, as well as Lea-Sophie Fischer from Russkaja on violin. Lea-Sophie can be heard with her beautiful violin playing in the midpart of “Dark Love Empress”.

How significant was it to have musicians of such gifts on the album as a whole.?

Alex: All these great players and their instruments and handmade sound colours to the album, which is very important for us. The sound of the Nyckelharpa for example has this ability to let you travel back in time and take you to places that the concept is about. Real-played instruments resonate so much more in the listener's ears than just digital plugins. We always love to work with these handmade, manmade sounds.

On some tracks, You and Elina Sirala appear in an apparent dual between melodic and harsh vocals, What story does this tell about the songs involved, and how important is it to forge chemistry with somebody with opposite vocal styles?

Alex: Since the beginning of our career we used these contrasting elements in our music especially with our two different voices. It just opens up a lot of possibilities, creates dynamics and tension in the music and makes it much more enriched. For “The Last Viking” we have been working on the songs and vocals together already in an early demo stage of the songs. I think that helped to shape the music and vocals exactly in the way we wanted it. Elina does a great job on the album. I can't wait to perform many of those new killer songs live together with Elina and the band.

French Rock Sensation Clementine Delauney of Visions Of Atlantis fame appears on “Black Butterfly”, What was it like working with her, and how much input did she have on recordings?

Elina- Vox: We wanted a singer with a different kind of voice to mine, that would bring another character and contrast to the song. “Black Butterfly” is a perfect choice as it gives the opportunity to bring out both of our voices while still blending them together and the division of the verses and other parts also worked very naturally. We were very fortunate that Clementine was able to travel to the studio during these difficult times and recording with her was a great experience! I hope we get to play the song live one day.

I know we have already discussed the historical elements of the lyrics, but what was the writing process like?

Tosso- Guitars/Bass: The writing and production of a new LEAVES' EYES album are always very intense, with love to all musical details and colours. When we write a new album we always approach it with a studio AND live perspective. So the symphonic elements and the metal sound of the band go hand in hand. We are not hiding behind walls of orchestration. We started with the songwriting in early 2019 at our headquarters MASTERSOUND STUDIOS. After having all songs worked out as demo versions, almost all final recordings took place in 2020, also here at MASTERSOUND STUDIOS. Besides our band recordings with vocals, drums, guitars and basses, we also recorded choirs, violins, Nyckelharpa and some more stuff here in-house.

What was it like to work with artist Stefan Heilemann, and how much influence did he have on the output of the album?

Alex: Heile is a great artist living here in our area in Stuttgart. We already worked together in the past for a few LEAVES' EYES albums and the outcome was always fantastic. Usually, the band and I have a clear idea and vision of what we want to create with the artwork, so Stefan Heilemann is executing these ideas. But of course, we also love his approach to photography and artwork. Besides he is a great human being. Schwaben Power, haha.

And Finally, the pandemic has played a catastrophic role on many band’s livelihoods over the past few months, how were you able to deal with the restrictions during the recording process?

Tosso: The main recordings for the album took place in early 2020. So at a certain point, with rising COVID numbers and the lockdown, it was really in danger if we could finish the album in time. The whole band came to our safe laboratories Mastersound Studios. Our drummer Joris made it just 1 hour 30 minutes before the borders were closed to Germany. Also, the photo shoot for the artwork was not so easy to realize during the pandemic. But in the end, we made everything happen in time, also with a big help from our friends in the Viking scene.

Thank you for agreeing to talk with Rambling Man’s Reviews

The Last Viking is available now via AFM Records

SONG OF THE DAY- HONEYBURST- REVELATION

Words by Anselm Anderson

Psychedelic rockers Honeyburst are the latest act to explode from Sweden. The four-piece formed in Halmstad a few years back have recently released their first single "Revelation" from their upcoming sophomore album, The band combines groove-laden riffs with a sonic edge harking back to the days of a certain Prince of Darkness.

Revelation is a hazy trip through time, as vocalist Noah Soderberg Stenman's rich voice hovers above highly-charged guitar lines. The track's tempo builds with each imaginative entrance capturing the listener's ears as Hammond keys screech along. The finale is a whirlpool of said instrument and blazing solos that combust like cosmic dust.

Honey burst explains the meaning behind " revelation",

"The song is about a person's revelation and awakening. When the frameworks and regulations one has become accustomed to fail or break, people are often inclined to think that what they now see as unstructured chaos is frightening and uncertain. But with the help of someone who rises from the chaos and chooses a role as a leader, there is an assurance of security. "

EP REVIEW- SECONDHAND HABIT- CONTACT HIGH (UNDISCOVERED GEM)

Secondhand Habit is another prospective talent, emanating from Canada. Contact High is the name of their latest release, a collection of 7 singles the band has recorded over the past year. The quintet combines combustible rock 'n' roll with synergetic guitar riffs and pummeling drum beats.

They have spent the past few years touring Canada, opening for Electric Six, Nashville Pussy & Daniel Wesley to name but a few. This has now brought the band much-needed admiration, following the success of its predecessor "From the Ashes",  including me. I noticed an email from the band, asking for coverage. I was intrigued when I read a list of comparisons, which namechecked Nirvana, Mastodon, Alice In Chains, and Faith No More. The result is a pinch of these influences that piqued my interest.

Opener 'Hey' is an explosive number to get things started. Groove-laden riffs, solid drumming, and a lyrical nature that reflects the songwriter's free-spirited demeanour.

Get Back looks at the breakdown of a relationship, exemplified through blistering solos, a catchy chorus, and full-throttle rock to move on with.

Soundwaves is the standout track for me, with an obvious A.I.C. influence. Turner's vocal register is confident and smooth, steeped in emotion. The dissonant chords, chug along with drummer Skylar Wilson's timely strikes and bassist Levi Megnibir's skilful basslines. The lyrics feel like a message to themselves not to give up. I enjoy how they write motivational songs like this with strong songwriting and enjoyable riffs.

Finally, the dark and broody Shapeshift closes things up like a rabid rottweiler, baying for blood. The echoes of highly charged guitars resonate around the eardrums with a serious purpose to educate about, what I guess, is about mental health. Turner ruminates, as the eeriness of drums circulates his
worrisome tone

ALBUM OF THE WEEK-: LEAVES' EYES- THE LAST VIKING

Words by Anselm Anderson

German Symphonic Metallers' Leave's Eyes return with their eighth studio effort The Last Viking, due out on Oct 23rd via AFM Records.

The band's love of Viking sagas and medieval instruments combine to tell the tale of the last battle of  Norway's King Harald III. The concept album chronicles his remaining thoughts, as he lays dying at Stamford Bridge in 1066. The Last Viking finalises a lasting story, made famous in cult albums Vinland (2005) & King of Kings ( 2015).

Leave's Eyes presents 14 songs of intelligent lyrics, bombastic musical passages and lung-busting singing to take you on this history lesson.

Death of Kings is a requiem to the fallen Haraldara ( King Harald), led by the sorrowful Elina Sirala, whilst tribal drums thud  to the lament of husky vocalist Alexander Krull in this beginning to an epic saga,

Chain Of the  Golden Horn is a pulsating Pagan Hymn. This reminds me of early 2000 Nightwish with more pomp. Sirala is the elegant songstress singing with range and melody, accompanied by chugging guitars, violins and Krull's growling timbre joining in on the bridge.

The opus Dark Love Emperess,  an enchanting composition tells the tale of the Viking hero, imprisoned in a Byzantium prison for his refusal to be the lover of the vengeful Zoe. The songwriting improves as the tracks go on. Melodic passages blended with heavy guitars and soprano- like singing delights in a structure to build these stories to a climax.

The album aims to create something different through complex time signatures, intense dynamism, and intricate instrumentation to tell a story not out of place at the local theatre.

War of Kings adds intensity to the music with pulsating rhythm parts, thunderous drums, and aggressive guitar parts, structured around the two vocalists ability to interplay off one another.

For Victory carries on this direction with a Celtic folk flavour, adding spice and variation to the differing styles of the musicians involved. The opening Nyckelharpa salvo feels like a jubilant display of triumph, as the tempo dictates from mid-tempo to breakneck speed. Krull's grunts and Sirala's evolving vocals make this feel like a medieval joust

The Last Viking is a ten-minute epic that mixes the menacing signatures of heavy metal, with dark atmospherics and the impending end to this saga. The medieval instruments add an ominous sense of doom, which left me with goosebumps.

The Last Viking is an intriguing journey through, drama, style, and incredible compositions to leave listeners aghast.

SONG OF THE DAY Cousin Betty - Drone

Words by Anselm Anderson

Cousin Betty presents a common favourite of this writer: A slab of distorted, psychedelic riffs and fervent grunge I cannot ever get tired of. Drone,  is the band's debut single taken from upcoming EP Left. via Golden Robot Records.

The band is the brainchild of guitarist/songwriter Damien Stoftka, a man responsible for writing many a riff for Molten Universe, Death Mattel etc in his 15-year career. Inspired by the Desert Sessions, Stoftka decided on a project that would centre around guest musicians and performers contributing music live. Stoftka was able to form his band through "Micro-bands" he supported to end up with a core line up of Matt Downey ( Vocals), and a rhythm section of Pat Walker (OHMS), Tom Bambachi,
( Lime Spiders, Aberration,) Ged and Tom Corben ( Lime Spiders) and Chris Drane ( Cherrywood).

Drone begins with a fuzz- filled riff that builds in tension, as the vocals interject. Downey's lyrics reflect the anger he feels, as the rhythm section and drums retain the mid-tempo throughout. The chorus includes gospel backing singers, adding resentment to Downey's initial disgust. The song finishes with an energetic guitar solo, full of frenzy and attitude. I feel this is a good beginning for Cousin Betty with a message about the negative side of social media. Drone is a riff- heavy taster of what to expect from their new EP.

Matt Downey explains how the song came about,
Damien played me a riff he'd been working on; it was immediately infectious, but I wasn't in the mood. I was upset about some Facebook "friend" just regurgitating some stuff - obvious garbage they'd heard in the media and seemingly verbatim. As I scrolled down their page I realised that their politics, faux ideals and very life's philosophy seemed the be simply illustrated through bad memes; some in direct contradiction to the one prior.

He adds, "While I'm an advocate of independent thought and am pleased that we don't all think the same, this hollow person represented to me that type of fool with no fixed opinion about ANYTHING, opposition for the sake of opposition and seemingly wilful ignorance. Not a problem in itself per se, but this dim prole was also a Dad...a mentor to a developing mind, ensuring further generations of the same. The lyrics spilled out and the entire song, complete with multiple takes and backing vocals was finished in about 40 minutes. On re-listens, I think I was pretty harsh but it's just what I was feeling at the time. This was our first real collaborative effort too. I loved it the second he showed me the opening riff."

Drone is now available on all good music platforms. Left will be available late 2020/ early 2021 via Golden Robot Records

ALBUM OF THE WEEK - SHAW DAVIS AND THE BLACK TIES- TALES FROM THE WEST

Words by Anselm Anderson

Guitar protege Shaw Davis is a precocious talent, hailing from Florida. Davis and his band, The Black Ties released a second studio album, Tales From The West to much critical acclaim a couple of years back. The album reappears in anticipation of the new album, due out next year. The musician combines roots rock, with psychedelia, blues and a hard rock edge to the glee of this writer.

The power trio, including drummer Bobby Van Stone and bassist Patrick Stevenson, formed in the summer of 2016 in Pompano Beach. They have gone on to forge quite the path for themselves with support slots alongside established acts like Foghat, Blackberry Smoke, Samantha Fish and Walter Trout. The album features nine tracks of sizzling guitar play, powerful vocals and soul-bearing lyrical content.

The Psychedelic charms of Atomic Groove has a Jimi Hendrix feel to it with dynamism, flair, and meaty riffs to whet the appetite of new listeners interested in what is to come. Davis' ability to explore the fretboard and change tempos throughout show an artist comfortable with his instrument.

Fire Inside follows with a cutting edge addition to their sound. Davis charges through heavy riffage like a motorcyclist trying out a Harley. The guitars are swift, energetic and stuffed full of variation. The bass and drums alternate between each musical phase like a band born to rock. the vocals are crisp and exude confidence.
Momma Told Me is a soulful track with the singer talking about leaving home. Davis' voice is warm and heartfelt, accompanied by his ever trusted rhythm marshals, The guitarist conducts tempo again with carefully structured phases and patterns that convey his raw emotions.

The self- titled track is a roots-based number that reminds me of Joe Bonamassa. The tight structures,  soft timbre, and buoyant musicianship excel in a personal tale of self- discovery.

And Finally, The Frank Zappa classic Willie The Pimp. Davis adds his own swagger to this fun rendition with a dirty guitar sound and edgy vocals. this was certainly the right choice to finish a
welcome introduction to one of rock's rising stars.

SONG OF THE DAY- THE PLASTIC PALS- MORE THAN AN ICON

Blog faves The Plastic Pals return with their third single, More Than an Icon, taken from much anticipated new EP It Could Be So Easy Free and Fine, due on November 6 via Polythene Records

The Swedish band, fronted by the delightful vocals of Haikan "Hawk"Soold, combine soaring power-pop choruses with a retro garage rock flavour to enlighten listeners of said genres. More Than An Icon is a change in direction to the band's usual combination of energetic rock and facetious lyrics with more poignancy to the music.

The opening strums of a melodic riff segue into Hawk's reflective mood as he ponders about the aforementioned person, You are more than an image of sin-cursed, suffering and grief". in this song about Jesus. His voice remains intimate and neutral before the bridge picks up the tempo with backing vocals from Jenny Roos. The chorus is wistful and mellow, which adds to the personal aspect. The song finishes with another sample of the excellent double - harmonies come to expect from the band. The solo's gradual build to a climax like a psychedelic cloud hovering overhead.

The Plastic Pals continue to deliver music is as much pleasing. as it is meaningful with in-depth lyrics and inspiring songwriting.

More Than An Icon is available now via all good music platforms.

UNDISCOVERED GEM- DYNAMITE PYE- DYNAMITE PYE ( ALBUM REVIEW

French retro rockers Dynamite Pye explode onto the music scene with their self-titled debut album. They decided to form with a group of fellow musicians and songwriters to create a rare experience in the studio. This was achieved by recording a live rendition at Kerwax studios in Brittany, France through the old analogue technologies of the 50's 60's and 70's. The band's brand of funk/pop/ rock and R'n'B exhibits a new perspective on the approach to music.

We're Gon' Have A Party kicks things off with this entrancing trip to 50's love of garage rock and boogie numbers. Lead singer Lari Lucien delivers a joyful track over vibrato guitar licks and cries of the contagious chorusWe're gon' have a party/we are gon' have a ball/we're going to boogie until the break of dawn/play that rock 'n' roll.

The soulful love ballad Rosy is next. The piano-driven track is about the one that got away. An emotional atmosphere created by bass, drums, and bluesy guitar breaks. Lucien sounds like a lost soul through emotive outpourings that add a sprinkle of reminiscent charm towards the end.

Fuel For Love is a folk song I believe is about a secret rendezvous, shall we say. Lucien once again writes an engaging song with humorous lyrics. His sorrowful tones are equally matched by simply strummed chordal patterns.

The Perry Leopard -written Somethings Depend on a Glance is a love ballad that isn't difficult to pull on the heartstrings. The string arrangement adds that depth of yearning to this beautiful track.

She Doesn't Give  A F#@k  is a lighthearted track that shares a similar sound to Eric Burdon in a reflective mood. The dynamic changes drastically from a slow and sombre blues song to an uptempo, energetic rock 'n ' roller.

And Finally, Melissa Cox completes the album for Dynamite Pye with the enchanting Tend Me Like A Fire. Cox's attentive vocals soar over the mellow piano keys to wrap up an entertaining outing for the band.

Dynamite Pye will take you through a wondrous journey of forgotten sounds and original songs to leave listeners feeling enlightened.

SONG OF THE DAY- STORM- GYPSY

Words by Anselm Anderson

Last month I wrote about an emerging talent named Storm, originally from Germany. The dual nationality German/South African singer, songwriter and actress arrived onto the scene with hard-hitting single Sinnerville, based on the subject of self-harm. You can find the full article in the link below. Click Here to read.

Storm now returns with follow up single Gypsy, due for release on Thursday, October 1st. This song indicates a change in direction to her predecessor into a country blues one about a free-spirited person. Another subject I think we could all gravitate towards sometime in our lives.

The song kicks in with a slide guitar intro segues into rhythmic guitar play by the lady herself. A mid-tempo gradually builds to the bridge, before lead guitarist Mark Dreyer intercepts with fierce riffs. Storm's soulful vocals engage the listener with her passion and energy. The funky rhythm guitar maintains that composure throughout, leaving a feeling of leading anywhere. I felt this supplemented the message behind Gypsy that life is unexpecting. The song forms resolution with a scintillating solo that builds into a dual-guitar jam session to complete another successful outing for this up and comer.

Gypsy represents another worthy example of strong songwriting, relatable lyrics, and crafted musicianship sure to win over a few more fans.

Gypsy is released on October 1st via all good music platforms

SONG OF THE DAY- JANE 'N' THE JUNGLE- LUCKY 7

Words by Anselm Anderson

Phoenix, Az powerhouses Jane 'n' The Jungle have struck luck with their latest single " Lucky 7", due out on October 2nd. The trio consists of Jordan White on vocals, Brian Dellis ( Guitars) and " Big B" on bass. They combine the nineties Alt-rock with a feel-good vibe and engaging lyrics to lift people's spirits during these tumultuous times.

Jane 'n The Jungle is the brainchild of two childhood friends, who were soon joined by bassist Brian Dague. The College graduates have been making waves with their first full-length record Concrete Jungle. " Lucky 7" will be their follow-up single to the hugely successful " Animal, produced by Grammy - award-winning producer Chuck Azarian, who also produces this track.

Lucky 7 is a free-spirited song about a night out at a Las Vegas casino. The synergetic guitars and emotive vocals combine to relive that very memory. The psychedelic chimes of guitar effects start things off like a good dream that gets better. White's soft and warm timbre introduces the listener to an intriguing story about taking your chances. White's vocals resonate through an innocuous charm to the fierce drumming and soaring guitar lines that enlighten the moods of anybody in doubt.

I fully enjoyed this nostalgic nod to a time when songs were simple, fresh, and energetic. Jane 'n' The Jungle may not be as chaotic as the name suggests, but their music will awaken a few good memories.

Jane ' N' The Jungle " Lucky 7" is available from October 2nd via all good platforms
