Album Review: Jimmy Lee Morris Run To The Sun

Words were written by Anselm Anderson for Rambling Man's Reviews
Jimmy Lee Morris is a British Singer/songwriter I have had the pleasure of writing a review for before, as a publisher for The Old School Project

Morris is originally from East Sussex but now resides in Devon. He has been entertaining audiences over the past 30 plus years at various Folk clubs and festivals across Europe and the UK. Morris had previously released “Last Of The Tall Ships” last year, and now returns with his latest album “ Run To The Sun”, an album full of heartfelt lyrics and feelgood tunes that this writer comes to expect from previous releases. Morris blends pop, hard rock, blues and folk to create ten telling tracks full of vigour and energy.

I will be exploring the new release further in this review, which begins with the upbeat Take that Away. The album opens with a blues- fused groove fest that combines the colourful tones of keyboard with the ever-ascending guitar notes that reverberate within the listener’s ears. Morris’ vocals are melodic and hushed that makes it that more infectious.

Rock and Roll Till The Sun Goes Down is more of a hip-swaying rock and roll track straight out of the fifties. Morris enthuses with glee, as he lets the harmonica loose. The carefully struck drumbeats in time with thunderous bass lines and guitar driven riffs that will keep the toes tapping alongside those hips.

Midnight Special Late-Night Radio Show is an ode to those late night radio music shows. Morris captures the essence with the bright keyboard sound set against the backdrop of a more intimate vocal range, as Morris sings softly with some electronica sounds that imitate the feeling of the listener tuning in.

The album continues this trend of drifting through various genres to create songs that strike for the heart and add a spring to your step.

Title track Run To the Sun is a nostalgic track about a local festival in Newquay of the same name. This is a track with all the styling of a sixties' folk song. An enchanting tale of a camper van trip with introspective lyrics that feels like a journey back in time. The overall feeling of enthusiasm combines harmonica and the acoustic guitar does leave a warm feeling stirring at the bottom of your heart.

The album wraps up with the aptly titled Leaving, I have often commented on Morris' writing ability, as he is able to tell stories, and capture images through words. This is one of those tracks that underlines this sentiment. The musician tells the story of a teenager leaving home in a delicate way. This folk song renders home with Morris' soft and emotive voice possibly capturing the very motions many teens feel in this situation.

Morris has always had that skill to write songs that convey emotions of real people, all the while doing it with a smile.

Run To The Sun will be released on July 12th, 2019

Single Review: Allan James- Our dreams

Words were written by Anselm Anderson for Rambling Man's Reviews

Allan James is a much-accomplished singer-songwriter, based in Northern Virginia, USA

James is a self-taught musician, who began playing guitar and singing songs aged 8 and by the time he reached his early teens, James had started to record and perform his original music for school, dances, and charities.

James returned to the US following a successful stint as host of his own guitar TV show in Iceland, whilst living over there. Allan James achieved critical acclaim following the release of his debut single on local radio stations, as well as releasing  6 albums to date. James has always been at the forefront of utilizing technologies and using the internet to build a fanbase.  He now returns with " Our Dreams", the latest single off his forthcoming new album. A beautifully structured track that captures the soul with its succinct guitar play and poetic lyrics. The track conjures feelings of serenity and calmness

" Our Dreams" begins with a reverb-soaked guitar riff that resonates like waves crashing against rocks. The opening sequence combines rich textures to evoke a sense of inner peace, which sets up the track nicely. James' voice reminds me of a younger David Gilmour ; tranquil and engaging. His lyrics interlope with an emotive message I feel is about moving on. The addition of the harmonica replicates an ode to this.

Allan James writes and produces a track that is everything the title says. A powerful and endearing track that will leave you drifting away with him

Allan James' new album is due out in the summer of 2019
