EP OF THE WEEK: THE ONE THEY FEAR- PERSEVERENCE

New York-based  Metalcore outfit The One They Fear have released their sophomore EP "Perseverance". The follow up to their 2016 debut "Silent Consent"

The trio formed in 2013 by vocalist Rick Hardy and guitarist Jon Robinson following many years of frequenting the metal scene. Jake Wilde later joined them on bass. The idea behind the band as a means to write about the perpetrators of humanity. "Perseverance" is a four-track EP that mixes metalcore stylings with a modern edge.

The EP opens with Perseverances a dynamic blast of clean and harsh vocals, accompanied by pulsating riffs and pummeling drums. The music itself has interesting changes in intervals that dictate the tempo. This gives an emotional connection to the baying listeners. Next up is the intense Metamorphosis with its high tempo and message of uniting against a common enemy. The story is told through colossal melodies that dominate the track. I personally this suits the emotions conveyed. Daunting breakdowns add a sense of perpetual loss that can only be mended through togetherness.

Ignite feels like a return to the 2000s with its highly energetic riffs, clean vocals and instrumental breakdowns, all steeped in raw emotion and anguish. I feel the songwriting is a major strength the band have brought to the recordings. Each song structured to absorb and enjoy. And finally, the Covid-19 inspired Is This Who We Are. The slow tempo directed through pulsating beats, sorrowful vocals, and an aggressive riff sums up how many must be experiencing at these times.

Overall, The One They Fear may have nothing to be scared of with four excellently composed tracks, haunting vocals, and tenacious guitars to bring through a new following. Words by Anselm Anderson.

Perseverance is now available to purchase/ download via all good music platforms such as Apple and Spotify.

SONG REVIEW- TARAH WHO? "MANNERS"

Photo: Maria Quintana

The firebrand  LA-based Tarah Who? return with new single "Manners", today (Feb 19th).
Frontwoman Tarah G. Carpenter and drummer Corale Herve ( backing vocals).

"Manners" was produced by Jason Orme and Tarah Carpenter. The video was directed by Lena Baez and shot in Downtown Los Angeles.

The track itself is a blend of energetic punk and raw emotion one can expect from the band.
"Manners" opens with a mid-tempo guitar slide segued into Carpenter's infective vocals. Herve retains tempo with neatly struck drumbeats. The track builds to the chorus with a singalong hook, before the track finishes where it began.

Carpenter says about the inspiration behind "Manners", "My mom was abandoned as a child and raised by nuns who were really strict. I have always thought that my mom had a really big heart. She always puts herself last and tries to understand everyone, which is a real strength. It occurred to me one day that she was taught to be a good citizen, with good manners, but no one really cared for her as a parent would."

SONG REVIEW- CALLING ALL ASTRONAUTS- "RESIST"

Industrial rockers' Calling All Astronauts have released their sixth single of the COVID-19 pandemic, Resist today ( February 19th). The track was mixed by double Grammy winner Alan Branch ( NIN, U2, Depeche Mode).

Resist is a political take on the Antifa movement and in particular, the battle against Fascism and far-right politics. The track is 3 minutes of industrial rock with dark atmospherics that highlight the continuous struggle. The track opens with a distorted riff, accompanied by swirling electronics. This builds with each passage that culminates in a foreboding bridge and chorus. The song continues to produce stark dynamics with a murky bassline that resolves in the song finding a message at the end.

SONG OF THE DAY: FUTURE RADIO " CLOSED DOORS"

South African Indie Rockers' Future Radio will release their latest single Closed Doors, from debut album FREEDOM today ( February 8th). The track tells the story of  unlocking a better future for ourselves in a time of global discontent

Describing the song, the band’s frontman, Johnny Future, state: “Throughout the song, there is a constant interplay between dark and light, not only lyrically but also instrumentally. The song being played in a shuffle makes it feel kind of up, in contrast to the minor key in which I wrote the song. It serves as a metaphor for everyday life.” Visual artist and FUTURE RADIO co-founder, Drikus Roets, confess that CLOSED DOORS is his favourite song from the band’s debut album. “This tracks really gets me going when I don’t feel motivated, and I’ve always been a sucker for a good guitar solo,” he remarks.

Closed Doors begins with a shuffle rhythm between drums and guitar before the song explodes into light. The catchy guitar riff repeats throughout as if the individual is walking through life aimlessly. The song transitions into a more high tension between the bridge and chorus before finding resolution in the singer's voice, and solo

In the Music Video, episode 12 of season 1, Drikus Roets has opted to tell the tale of the protagonist facing the decision of choices to make.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: LOST FOR LIFE" DON'T LET IT CONSUME YOU"

WORDS BY ANSELM ANDERSON

American Metalcore outfit Lost For Life are set to release their debut LP " Don't Let It Consume You" on February 26th via Dead Serious Recordings.

The band were first formed last year pre- pandemic by former For The Fallen Dreams vocalist Dylan Richter and ex- Wilson singer Jason David Spencer. This is the first time I had heard of either musician, so was intrigued about the album.

They have remarkably never set foot in a studio to record this album, which makes it more interesting to listen to. The outfit has a modern edge, reminiscent of late 2000s metal bands of the time, which experimented with unclean and melodic dual vocals. aggressive breakdowns and lyrics based on relationships and mental health

This ten-track LP doesn't miss out on these ingredients. Stay The Same is a combination of the two vocalists' differing styles: Richter's unclean voice against Spencer's sweet melodies. The two combine to express raw passion and emotion over thick, brutal riffs and intense breakdowns.

Don't Let It Consume You takes a more commercial approach with varieties in the sound. The two singers unleash a tenacious assault in the backdrop of turbocharged riffage, hook-laden choruses and intensity only divided by fragile lines that add depth to the song. It is understandable to hear what the band attempt to do with this LP, and to what demographic. I feel the unclean vocals are angry, raw, and unapologetic in juxtaposition to the refined, serene nature of the clean ones. This appeals to new listeners, as well as ones with a sense of nostalgia in their ranks.

Too Late To Stay is another slab of pure guttural rage, pummeling drums and crisp, in-your-face guitars.

Night Terrors is a far more melodious track on the album, and finally, Hard To Stomach wraps up with synergetic guitars, soaring vocal melodies and Richter barking like a hungry dog.

Overall, The vocals improve drastically throughout, offering various elements of emotions and tones. Lost For Life delivered an impressive opening with their first LP.

Don't Let It Consume You will be out on February 26th via Dead Serious Recordings
