Last week, Stereophobia released their highly anticipated sophomore album, Choke on This, through Eclipse Records. This album follows their 2023 debut, No One Cares, and features a straightforward blend of alt-rock and grunge influences. Stereophobia is a power trio based in Lisbon, Portugal, consisting of guitarist and vocalist Mike Rocha, drummer Daniel Antunes, and bassist Bruno Santos. Produced by Miguel Camillo and mixed, mastered and recorded alongside Stereophobia at MC Studios.
Choke on This consists of thirteen tracks filled with musically unsettling tones, angst-driven lyrics, and sonically enriching riffs that cut deep.

The album opens with an unsettling monologue that transitions into the intense cries of 'Maggots', which combines frenetic riffs and frenzied harsh vocals, propelling this album into a dramatic surge of grunge. The album maintains a grunge essence, echoing Nirvana and Seether with the haunting rock of 'Drown', portraying a man in despair. The sombre tones of a singer embarking on a spiralling journey are reflected in the tormented tales of 'Uncle Clarke (Made Me Do It),' which focus on themes of suicide and depression. The theme continues with the anthemic 'Don't Belong' and 'The Tourist,' which sound like anthems for eeriness, featuring thick, disjointed basslines blended with painstakingly melodic vocals and whirling guitar riffs.
The album takes a commercial direction with 'Everything's Gone' and the intense punk track 'Twisted Fuck,' releasing some pent-up anger and loneliness before transitioning into the catchy 'The Freak Show. ' A standout track with its take on societal values, catchy riffs, and a sing-along chorus. The album transitions into a darker space with the intense metal riffs on track 'Plastik Queen,' which explores themes of superficiality, highlighting the band's discontent towards celebrity.
Stereophobia offers a fascinating take on the grunge scene, tackling highly debated topics with their thought-provoking lyrics and a mix of uncomfortable rock music paired with easy-listening riffs. The band skillfully expresses their emotions through mature songwriting, delivering solid rock tracks at various points throughout their work.
