Metalcore band Cober Mouth, a rising star in the metal scene, has been lighting up stages and competing in prestigious competitions since their emergence five years ago. The quartet is now preparing for the release of their new EP, "Untethered," on Friday, September 6th.

The five-tracker is an uncomfortable and unabashed blend of bludgeoning riffage, sinister breakdowns and emotionally unstable vocals mixed with raw and emotive lyrics, which have drawn comparisons with masked crusaders Slipknot and contemporaries like Architects and Northlane. The band consists of vocalist Adam Jones, drummer Dylan Plenty, guitarist Lewis Cunningham and bassist Sam Windsor. Since their formation in Bristol, England, they have performed a sold-out show there and supported bands like Osiah and Drip Fed Empire. Cober Mouth now hopes to change all that with their newest EP. The use of samples and synths is reminiscent of how Slipknot arrived on the scene with venom and aggression, but Cober Mouth is a new breed of animal.

Adam Jones mentioned in a press release that the album explores the human emotional experience, which is apparent from the beginning. The self-titled track 'Untethered' takes listeners on a journey through the mind of a sociopath. Dark samples clash against distorted voices before exploding with Jones' intense vocals alongside thunderous riffs and drumming. 'Beneath The Hydrogen' increases intensity as Jones screams over polyrhythmic guitar lines and conflicting grooves. The mixture of raw, aggressive metal with melodic, dreamlike passages addresses internal struggles.

I understand the comparisons with the men in masks because Jones' vocal dynamism ranges from rabid screams to frenetic rapping. The band's musicianship is built around crafting riffs that build to a frenzied climax, while also experimenting with fast-paced metal and stripped-back passages. 'All I Created' is a dark metal track with a focus on a melodic chorus and guitar harmonies. Finally, "Open Mouth..." feels like a bonus track. The commercial rock track features the rapper Blue Saint and doesn't seem to fit in with what Cober Mouth is doing here.

Overall, Cober Mouth delivers ballsy metal with breakneck speed. The adventurous tracks give something for listeners to enjoy without feeling watered down or repetitive.
