EP REVIEW: ELECTRON- HOLLOW
London-based contemporary metal band Electron released their new EP 'Hollow' last Friday (May 24th). Following last year's debut album 'Defiance', this release features five turbo-charged tracks. The band combines grunge vocals with crunchy riffs to captivate the listener's attention.
Formed in 2022, the trio are led by the angst-ridden vocals of guitarist Jason Payne, the heavy strikes of drummer Nuno Bessa and the hypnotic basslines of Joanna Hyde. The trio create hook-laden, anthemic rock with razor-sharp riffs that harken back to the tale end of the Nu-Metal era. The band has promoted the release extensively across digital platforms and magazines and has also toured the UK in support of Riff-masters King Buffalo.
'Hollow' was produced by acclaimed producer Romesh Dodangoda, whose work I have covered extensively. He is a producer who likes to get the best out of his artists, and this five-tracker is no exception.
The searing 'Burning Inside' opens proceedings with Payne's infectious vocals blending raging guitars and pummeling drums, which will get the listeners on their feet. In addition, there is a delicious solo that reminds me of classic rock acts like Black Sabbath.
Next up is 'The Unbound', which combines haunting vocal melodies and machine gun riffs that are as dark, as it is captivating. Electron is adept at fusing metal with structured riffs, daunting verses, and harrowing breakdowns with mesmerising solos.
'Tame ' is anything but. The impenetrable screams of Jason Payne bring a bound of energy to the jagged riffs and raw emotions that are conveyed to the listener. Joanna Hyde's bass rumbles along like an unstable cobra. The bass acts like a second guitar as it interacts with the hectic drum fills of Bessa. The EP feels like a throwback to acts like Mudvayne and Korn, with classic acts like Sabbath. This could be attributed to the maturity of the band as they attempt to mix their influences like a newly discovered cocktail.
The title track 'Hollow' is another captivating slice of angst-ridden metal with a catchy chorus, complemented by the instability of the track. The song moves between contemporary melodic rock with the punctuated rhythms of nu-metal, before finishing with a monologue alongside a frentic guitar finish.
Finally. the EP wraps up with the tormented 'Loathe' sounding like a tortured soul looking to escape. This is the more melodic of the tracks but still packs a punch toward the end.
Overall, Electron delivered a blistering EP with non-stop riffs, crafted songwriting, and an unpredictable release bound to engage listeners.
RATING: 4/5
