Album Review: Healthy Junkies-Listen To the Mad

Words by Anselm Anderson

Independent Label Banana Records presents the veterans of pop-punk, Healthy Junkies, the popular quartet from London, cordially invite you to 'Listen to the Mad', their latest LP released last week.

The fourteen-track album fuses '90s pop-punk choruses with grunge-era riffs, incorporating psychedelic rock and goth elements. Established in 2010, the band was created by French vocalist Nina Courson and guitarist Phil Honey-Jones to promote greater awareness of mental health, which is reflected in their name. The duo soon added bassist Dave Whitmore and drummer Dave Gaut to build a nationwide fanbase, which included supporting some of punk's notable names, as well as festival appearances and in print publications. They even appeared in a Sky Arts documentary entitled "The United Kingdom of Pop"It wasn't long before American DJ Rodney Bingenheimer took notice, propelling them to new levels of exposure.

They soon entered the studio with producer Jonathan Jones at his Audiohaus studios in London to create an infectious collection of anthemic rock for the album's choice to blend genres, which are unpredictable, reflecting the varying moods of the songs.

The upbeat pop-punk of "Favourite Place" sends positive vibes to the listener, whilst "Julie's Got a Job" is a tongue-in-cheek track. The slowed-down grunge numbers like "Self-Conscious" evoke memories of bands like Hole. Other highlights include the psychedelic "Dead Souls" and "Desire", while there are dark tracks like "Media Whore", which reflect the national addiction to seeking attention through various mediums. There is also a reggae-tinged track called "Son and Daughter", which will surprise those tuning in for another 90's pop-punk trip down memory lane.

Overall, The Healthy Junkies create the right dose of rock, pop and punk with addictive songs to keep listeners in a good mood for its entirety.

You can check them out online via all good streaming platforms now.
