WORDS BY ANSELM ANDERSON

Progressive Rock Duo The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara returns with their latest EP, Origins, released last Friday, November 1st. The duo comprises Singapore-born vocalist Daphne Ang and Italian Bassist and guitarist Andrea Papi. Formed in 2020, the two musicians met in Camden, London, UK, and quickly developed a brand of progressive rock that blends poetry, electronica, and metal music.

Ang also contributes piano and keyboards to the record, whilst Papi lends his unique vocals to two tracks on the release "Bite the Bullet" and "It Goes". The duo commented how they want "Origins" to widen their reach with new listeners. The follow-up to the hugely successful 2022 release "Trust No Leaders" pushes the boundaries with its fresh production and merger of several genres.

The EP opens with the seven-minute "Feed the Beast". an atmospheric number with an opening poetic monologue, accompanied by industrial rock, electronica and heavy metal. Next up is "Bite the Bullet", the first of two tracks to feature Papi on vocals alongside rapper Mr Meuri. This emotional song focuses on rapid-fire rap verses and a melodic chorus, set against a backdrop of aggressive electric guitars.

The essence of TCOMAS revolves around each member helping one another explore their inner emotions through music that resonates with them. "Waves" gives Ang the chance to sing a progressive track, over electronic ambience. The piano-laden "Per Astra" is reminiscent of a dark lullaby, whilst "Masterium Tremendum" is an emotional piece featuring piano, death metal, and an orchestra. The EP finishes with the Papi-led "It Goes", a ballad accompanied by a strong acoustic set.

Overall, TCOMAS wanted to reach a wider audience on "Origins", which gives two talented individuals scope to express themselves through raw emotion. The duo write some compelling music with thought-provoking lyrics and dynamic production. It is a release bound to please fans of poetry and groundbreaking rock.
