Album Review: IN We Fall- Inner Self

Words by Anselm Anderson

In We Fall is a new act on Eclipse Records. Most recently, they released their debut, "Inner Self." The ten-tracker is a deeply personal and philosophical take on a band that has reached a pivotal moment in its career.

The quartet, from Portugal, combines grunge stylings with progressive elements and alternative rock signatures to help create a sound reminiscent of bands like Alice in Chains and Alter Bridge. Formed in 2022, In We Fall was formed by guitarist Carlos Carniero and drummer Federico Lopes with a childhood dream of creating a band. Vocalist Daniel Moreira soon offered his gruff vocal lines and productive values into the mix providing a retro sound of dark melodies, hook-laden choruses and intricate guitar lines for fans of grunge-era bands.

Moreira recorded, mixed and produced the album at Evolui Som Studios and the results are a polished and refined edge to the music. In We Fall challenge themselves through lyrics about war, betrayal and trust issues.

The heavy guitar sounds of "Road to Li(v)e" and "(A)void" opens the album with its profound lyrics and dark melodies. The band then showcases their songwriting credentials with deeper tracks like "Whole Again", Silent War" and "Looking Inside" reflecting their inner struggles with tight melodies and clean, grunge-influenced guitar breaks. On Inner Self,  the quartet focuses on experimenting with several sounds to suit their style. The melodic tracks allow the band to convey their deepest musings, whilst the heavier ones have more freedom of expression of their musical talents.

"Half-Human" showcases long, progressive guitar lines that embody both qualities effectively. In contrast, "Winter Shades" is an alternative rock track featuring a catchy chorus that reflects the cold emotions associated with winter. Finally, the guitar work in "Empty Hand" is both sinister and mesmerizing, bringing the album to a captivating conclusion.

IN WE FALL helps reign in the winter period with a mature and captivating combination of alt-rock, prog and grunge for new listeners. The band hopes to attract a stronger fanbase through its wily lyrics and easy-to-listen brand of music.
