Sweden's Female fronted blues rock band Ebba Begkvist and TheFlat Tire Band recently released their second studio album Four Wings via the excellent The Sign Records.  I have written some reviews for the label in the past and they usually produce some superb music from Sweden.

'Four Wings' is no exception as it is an album really about two halves; the first is 70's induced heavy blues rock, and the second is psychedelic and soulful melodies. The follow-up to 2020's Spilt Milk was produced and recorded by Ebba herself at  Silence Studio in Koppom as well as Helgen Studio, in Stockholm. As a producer, this allows her to add depth and emotion to each track. Formed in 2017 as a solo project, Ebba Bergkvist later added bassist Björn Björnehult Korning, drummer Adam Randolph and Finnish guitarist Jonas Skeppar to form the band it is today. Ebba gained critical acclaim after the release of her debut album, "Alright," in 2019, and went on to win the 2023 Junior Blues Prize. Her latest album, "Four Wings," was inspired by a dream about a white bird, which she metaphorically translated to represent arrogance and unrealistic ambitions with the title.

Ebba's rich and raw vocals are well complemented by the band's music, drawing comparisons to artists like Jefferson Airplane, Led Zeppelin, and more contemporary ones like Blues Pills. The album opens with the track "Four Wings," featuring hazy riffs, blues rhythms, and emotion-filled vocals, reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix's powerful solos.

Next up is the soulful vibes of "The Pack," featuring gospel choruses over blues-induced riffs that take the listener back to the hazy days of the 1970s. The album's laid-back approach is a welcome antidote to some of life's woes. The infectious melodies of 'Northeast Passage' and the funky grooves of 'Vice Versa' demonstrate the raw vibes of Garage Rock. Bergkvist's vocals may be youthful, but she sings with raw passion and versatility, allowing her to perform various styles.

Ebba is backed by a talented band that delivers impressive guitar solos and ethereal basslines, adding to the authenticity of each track. The album explores a variety of styles, from roots rock on 'Seasick', to the powerful lullaby 'Eastern Prairies', and the melancholic folk of 'Backside' and 'Black Horses'. It's a must-listen for fans of blues, folk, and psychedelic garage rock.

'Four Wings' highlights the versatile talents of another exciting rock band from Sweden.

Rating: 8.5/10
