Napalm Records Album Review: Wind Rose- Trollslayer

Words by Anselm Anderson

Italian dwarf metal band Wind Rose begins a new journey with the release of Trollslayer via Napalm Records today. This album follows their 2022 release War Front, offering another round of modern metal, catchy singalong choruses, and impressive string arrangements with bombastic production.

The band greatly impacted the metal scene with their popular song "Diggy Diggy Hole", gaining a strong following on YouTube and TikTok. I gave their last album a 9/10 rating due to the songwriting and enjoyable songs on the album and subsequently entered the Top 10 US Current Hard Rock list. On Trollslayer, the band take a new direction with a sound heavily influenced by battle bands of the past like Turisas and Hammerfall. The tracks have a more serious edge, leaning more towards a sentimental side, rather than relying on writing tracks that will become hits.

The production is still as polished as "War Front", giving the sense the listener has been taken on the ride with the band, much like Bobo Baggins and his motley crew of elves. Whilst the lyrics are more centred on the notion of telling a story, rather than an epic. The album opens with the beautiful, Game of Thrones-inspired instrumental "Of Ice and Blood"

Null

'Trollslayer" includes nine tracks, as the rousing anthems "Dance of the Axes" and "The Great Fest Underground" pick up speed and energy through their ferocious riffs, fist-pumping choruses and towering string arrangements. The fun doesn't stop with the party anthem "Rock and Stone," inspiring the dwarf alter ego video game Deep Rock Galactic, immersing the listener in all the frivolity and pomp the band delivers.

The band's mid-tempo tunes and rhythmic guitar play feel like heartfelt songs as the band gains momentum through the reflective "To Be A Dwarf". The album takes a breather with the title track "Trollslayer" and before the fast-paced  "Home of the Twilight" raises the hopes of the dwarves. The album ends with two slow-paced odes "Legacy of the Forge" and "No More Sorrow" underlining the maturity of Wind Rose over the past few years.

Wind Rose delivers another powerful dose of battle metal. The sound has matured, but these dwarves still champion true metal.

Rating: 8.5/10
